HISFORYOF THE TEMPLE
According to Inscription's carved on the walls of the temple in Dravidian (Tamil)
script, it is noted that the name of the deity as CHOKKAPERUMAL .along with
Consorts SRIDEVI and BHOO DEVI OF SALIGRAMA SHILA. The location of the
temple is written as TOMMALUR pertaining to «DESIMANIKKA PATTANAM" of
Ilipakka nadu (present yelahanka) in Raja Raja Cholavalanadu. The earliest
available inscriptions pertain to 1200.A.D. of Raja Raja chola period. According
to this inscription, IRVI TRIPURANTHAKA CHETTIAR AND HIs WIFE PARVATHI
CHETTICTI for he betterment of the shoulder and sword of Tribhvana Mallar
Vempi Devar Probabbly chieften of Dommnalur, donated wet and dry lands, at
Jalapalli village and the lake at Vinnimangalam. They have als granted garden
Land to Iron piran AIlala Nambiyar who has land rights of this temple as
donation and that his dependantsfor doing archan¡ in the temple and the right
to' carry out prathishtå ceremony d some more lands for the maintenance of the
temple. In order to preserve this ancient shrine, Sti M.Krishna Reddy and
the devotees of Dommalur under took renovation of the temple during the period
1975-1983 preserving the ancient structures restored in the present forn.
Inscriptions pertaining to Hoysala King Ramanandadeva in 1300.A.D. indicates
sanctioning money for festivals. Thus construction of the temple might be
during or prior to that period. According to Karnataka gazetteer, he original
structure seems to be garbhagriha and the ardh¡ mantapa belongs to Chola
period. The front navaranga is built in typical vijayanagara style. The cellar is
found in the arda mantapa of the temple for storing valuable which is now
covered. in the prakara of the temple Sri Vidyaganapathi temple was
constructed by Sri G.Ramaiah Reddy during 1985 and during 2007.Sri Bhaktha
Anjaneya temple was constructed by Sri G.JayaramaReddy.The heriditary archak
Sri. R.Keshavachar,his family members and the devotees who have contributed
for the restoration of this ancient shrine have formed, the
SRI CHOKKANATHA SWAMY SEVA,

and also for the maintainence of the temple.
STHALA PURANA
Sree Akhilandakoti bramhanda Nayaka ,Sree Vaikuntavasi,Sree Bhoo, sametha,
Sree paraavasudeva Baghavan avyahatha divya agnayaih Saptha Rishi mandala
Prasna utthara malika, states, that a great sage did intense penance at this
place to get the blessings of Lord Vishnu" for the benefit of the Iocals here.
Lord Vishnu was pleased and informed the sago to instal his Divya Vigraham"
so that the locals can regulary worship and fulI-fiIl their wishes. It was also
mentioned that all should notforget the Anthima Smrurthi" at the time of death
to achieves Paramapada Mooksham". Accordingly, the moola vigraham was
installed at a high place so that it can receive the radiance of cosmiC energy
and radiate in all eight directions at all times. The temple is built in such a way
at a high place facing East. The suns rays fall on the main deity at sun rise,
specially one can see it clearly during end of February to first
week of March and also during and end of August to first week of September, of
every calendar year, during Uttarayana and Dakshinayana respectively. People
who worship the Lord and carryout pradhakshinam ar blessed with his grace,
to fulfil their wishes.
